Record-Breaking Scores at the BV Pro-Am

BV Pro Am Finalz-29

Maybe it was all the carbon fiber Rock Stars sitting in the eddy. It was probably also the Downtown Hole’s user-friendliness and the fact that most hole moves were possible there. One way or another, it was quite a show Saturday night for the finals of the BV Pro-Am, as myself and Stephen Wright each [...] Read more »

BV Pro Am Kayak Open -14

The BV Pro Rodeo became the BV Pro-Am this year as we offered a number of open classes, and the response was really exciting! We had around 30 open competitors vying for a whole pile of prizes, including a Jackson Kayak All Star, won by Open Men’s competitor Craig Phillips! It was so great to [...] Read more »

Holding onto the lip of the horizontal roof, it hits me- there’s no turning back. Feeling scared and exhausted, I switch gears mentally. Not pulling the 5.10+ crux is a poor option at this point- I’d probably fall 10-15 feet. It would probably be a clean fall into space, but I might catch a ledge, [...] Read more »

BV Whitewater Park-3-web

We have had 400 cfs (cubic feet per second) of water in the river for a while now, and I’ve been excited to discover that even that little water is enough for some great practice, especially at the new LoDo Wave due east of Eddyline Brewpub. Many years I don’t even get in my boat [...] Read more »

1 week in the desert, 2500 vertical feet of climbing, 18 classic pitches When Kennley and I pulled away from BV at the end of November loaded with 3 weeks worth of climbing and camping gear, two dogs and a cat, I thought perhaps we had lost it. The drive went well enough. There [...] Read more »

“I felt like I could have been anywhere,” Kennley told me, referring to the jalaBlu workshop with Andrew Rivin this weekend. Having grown up in Buena Vista, Kennley has as good a sense as any of the cultural shifts taking place here. “We had over 40 people in both the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions,” [...] Read more »

John Boulder Garden-1

We still have a whole slew of high quality problems set on our public climbing boulders after September’s ABS competition. Here’s some video of a few problems on just 1 of the 3 boulders. Lots of new holds have made the quality of the climbs much higher, so come check ‘em out! Also, if [...] Read more »

Here’s a message from Earl Richmond of Colorado Kayak Supply about another great public park amenity in our River Park. For those of you that do not know, Buena Vista and Northern Chaffee County are very close to getting our public Pump Track built.  It will be located in front of the Buena Vista [...] Read more »

ELF Boating on the Numbers, Arkansas River-8

ELFing, Extremely Low Flow paddling, is a term coined by Jim Snyder, one of kayaking’s founding fathers. ELFing extends our boating season, and here on the Arkansas it is possible to boat year round. At ELF flows large rocks that are covered at higher flows now loom overhead, and many have fantastic shapes on the downstream side caused by flowing water. Each of these flow rocks is unique and many of the shapes take on magical and mystical properties for us ELFers.

Buena Vista Disc Golf Course Map

It’s been fun to see the buzz around town about the new Buena Vista Disc Golf Course. Of course the experienced disc golfers are having a great time. Meanwhile, if you’re a newbie like me, you’ve bought some new discs from Colorado Kayak Supply or The Trailhead and perhaps donated a few to the Pinon [...] Read more »
