Climbing the Sleeping Indian

Holding onto the lip of the horizontal roof, it hits me- there’s no turning back. Feeling scared and exhausted, I switch gears mentally. Not pulling the 5.10+ crux is a poor option at this point- I’d probably fall 10-15 feet. It would probably be a clean fall into space, but I might catch a ledge, [...] Read more »

BV Whitewater Park-3-web

We have had 400 cfs (cubic feet per second) of water in the river for a while now, and I’ve been excited to discover that even that little water is enough for some great practice, especially at the new LoDo Wave due east of Eddyline Brewpub. Many years I don’t even get in my boat [...] Read more »

1 week in the desert, 2500 vertical feet of climbing, 18 classic pitches When Kennley and I pulled away from BV at the end of November loaded with 3 weeks worth of climbing and camping gear, two dogs and a cat, I thought perhaps we had lost it. The drive went well enough. There [...] Read more »

Image for Gorgeous Fourmile Arch Video

I’ve always heard rumors about an arch in Fourmile, the rugged swath of public BLM land just north of Buena Vista. The Fourmile map available at the route 375 turnoff into fourmile simply shows an “arch” near Davis Meadow. But it wasn’t until I watched this beautiful video by John and Allison Abdelnour, owners of [...] Read more »

ELF Boating on the Numbers, Arkansas River-8

ELFing, Extremely Low Flow paddling, is a term coined by Jim Snyder, one of kayaking’s founding fathers. ELFing extends our boating season, and here on the Arkansas it is possible to boat year round. At ELF flows large rocks that are covered at higher flows now loom overhead, and many have fantastic shapes on the downstream side caused by flowing water. Each of these flow rocks is unique and many of the shapes take on magical and mystical properties for us ELFers.

Buena Vista Disc Golf Course Map

It’s been fun to see the buzz around town about the new Buena Vista Disc Golf Course. Of course the experienced disc golfers are having a great time. Meanwhile, if you’re a newbie like me, you’ve bought some new discs from Colorado Kayak Supply or The Trailhead and perhaps donated a few to the Pinon [...] Read more »

St. Elmo, Fall Colors, Colorado Ghost Town-13

I’m doing my best this year to get myself out of the office and on some adventures during our brief but spectacular fall color season. Yesterday I took a drive up the Chalk Creek Valley to the popular Ghost Town St. Elmo in search of gold. The weather was dynamic, with lots of clouds, but [...] Read more »
