dustin urban 1.5 wave

The Numbers is our bread and butter class 4 run in Buena Vista, and when it hits around 2,800-3,000 cfs, we like to head up and surf the 1.5 Wave. It’s a very fast, super-dynamic wave that’s fun to just surf and hang on. If you can set up and time it right, you can [...] Read more »

There is something inexplicable about watching Dustin win the Teva Mountain Games Freestyle Kayak event once again. But then again, I feel this way most every year, since he was won 5 out of the 6 years we have been together. The event is so stacked- it is arguably the most [...] Read more »

BV Pro Am Finalz-29

Maybe it was all the carbon fiber Rock Stars sitting in the eddy. It was probably also the Downtown Hole’s user-friendliness and the fact that most hole moves were possible there. One way or another, it was quite a show Saturday night for the finals of the BV Pro-Am, as myself and Stephen Wright each [...] Read more »

BV Whitewater Park-3-web

We have had 400 cfs (cubic feet per second) of water in the river for a while now, and I’ve been excited to discover that even that little water is enough for some great practice, especially at the new LoDo Wave due east of Eddyline Brewpub. Many years I don’t even get in my boat [...] Read more »

ELF Boating on the Numbers, Arkansas River-8

ELFing, Extremely Low Flow paddling, is a term coined by Jim Snyder, one of kayaking’s founding fathers. ELFing extends our boating season, and here on the Arkansas it is possible to boat year round. At ELF flows large rocks that are covered at higher flows now loom overhead, and many have fantastic shapes on the downstream side caused by flowing water. Each of these flow rocks is unique and many of the shapes take on magical and mystical properties for us ELFers.
